I've been taking a hard look at the executive job market lately, and let me tell you, it's a fascinating beast in 2025. It's a bit like diagnosing a patient, we need to health-check the industry to really understand what's going on, both for the amazing candidates out there and for us in executive search trying to connect them with the right opportunities.
Frankly, it’s a real mixed bag. Some sectors are booming, others are holding steady, and everyone's scrambling to adapt to this new world of work. Let’s dive in...
Executive Job Market Climate: 2025 Half-Way Health Check
Resilient, transformative, and competitive – those are the words that come to mind when I think about the executive job market right now. What's driving all this? A cocktail of rapid tech changes, evolving work models (hybrid is here to stay!), and shifting business priorities.
Here’s what I'm seeing on the front lines:
"Hybrid 360" Leaders are Hot: Forget just managing teams in one location. Now, execs need to seamlessly lead across digital and physical environments. I’m calling it "Hybrid 360" leadership. If you can't navigate that, you're going to struggle.
AI is No Longer Optional: Anyone who knows AI, data analytics, and how to digitally transform a business is basically gold dust right now. If you're not upskilling in these areas, you're getting left behind, plain and simple.
Fractional is the New Full-Time (Sometimes): More companies are seeking specialised leadership on a flexible basis, dipping their toes into fractional roles. Good for companies looking for a fast impact and great for candidates wanting flexibility.
Equality is still relevant: Companies actually understand the value of diverse leadership.
ESG is a must: Can your executive lead you on the journey to better Environmental, Social, and Governance? This is something stakeholders look at very closely.
Soft Skills Matter More than Ever: Forget being an unemotional robot in the workplace. Emotional intelligence is really something that a lot of companies look for, along with the ability to adapt and positive cultures.
Location, Location, No Location? With hybrid working models becoming more prominent, traditional hubs are starting to fade out and remote and hybrid centres are expanding across the globe.
Market Health and Activity - A Balancing Act
Despite everything going on in the world, executive hiring has been surprisingly resilient. Some sectors (tech and healthcare, surprise, surprise) are positively thriving. The market seems robust but it can be misleading as there are also challenges.
Talent's Market
But here's the kicker: there are a lot of executive roles, but not enough qualified candidates. Top talent has more leverage than ever before. This often results in candidates negotiating against each other with bigger employers.
What This Means for Candidates
If you're an executive right now, especially with those in-demand skills I mentioned, you're in a pretty good spot.
You have more opportunities, especially if you're open to fractional or remote roles.
You can be selective and negotiate for better terms. Don't be afraid to prioritise companies with strong DEI and ESG values – it speaks volumes about their culture.
Continuous learning is non-negotiable. Keep upskilling!
What This Means for Executive Search
Okay, this is where it gets challenging. We have to up our game to attract and assess the right candidates:
Our strategies need to evolve to find those hybrid leaders with tech fluency and diverse backgrounds. The old playbook just doesn't work.
We need to be hyper-aware of employment laws and Equality expectations. Compliance is key, but so is promoting a strong employer brand to attract the best.
Expect longer, more rigorous searches. Cultural fit and future-readiness are paramount.
I think that there is no way that a recruiter can get the perfect mix of skill set and company ethos without using psychometric testing. These are scientifically proven methods and give a good indication of character traits!
Executive Job Market Health Check: A Quick Snapshot

Going back to this – I honestly believe psychometric testing is vital. It adds a layer of objective data to what can often be a subjective process. They help us:
Assess personality traits and leadership styles.
Predict job performance and cultural fit.
Identify potential development areas.
It's about making smarter, more informed decisions.
Adapt or Fall Behind
The executive job market in 2025 is robust but adapting quickly. It demands agility, compliance, and a renewed focus on employer branding and candidate experience.
